Rebuilding your credit: a concrete 6-step plan
Credit Rebuilding your credit does not happen overnight, but it does happen, and it is more within reach than most people think. In Quebec, your credit score is calculated by Equifax and TransUnion from very specific habits. Pull the right levers and you will see it climb back, step by step. Here is our 6-step plan.
Step 1: Pay every bill on time, no exceptions
Payment history is the single biggest factor in your score. One payment more than 30 days late can leave a mark for years.
- Set up pre-authorized payments for your fixed bills.
- Schedule reminders a few days before each due date.
- If a month is tight, pay at least the minimum on time.
Here, regularity counts for more than the amount.
Step 2: Keep your balances under 35% of your limits
Your card utilization rate carries a lot of weight. If your card has a $2,000 limit, try not to carry more than roughly $700 in balance.
- A low balance signals that you manage your credit well.
- Making a payment before your statement date can lower the balance that gets reported.
- Avoid maxing out a card, even temporarily.
Step 3: Vary your types of credit
The bureaus like to see that you handle different kinds of credit: a card, a loan, a line of credit. That variety, known as credit mix, counts for part of your score.
This is exactly where a car loan becomes especially useful: it adds a fixed-instalment credit to your file, on top of giving you a reliable vehicle.

Step 4: Check your credit file
You have the right to obtain your credit file for free from Equifax and TransUnion. Do it at least once a year.
Look for:
- Mistakes that drag your score down (accounts that are not yours, incorrect amounts).
- Accounts already settled but still showing as owed.
- Signs of fraud or identity theft.
In Quebec, Law 25 strengthens your rights over your personal information. If you find an error, you can request a correction, which can lift your score with no other effort on your part.
Step 5: Avoid multiple credit applications
Every time you submit a firm credit application, an inquiry is recorded in your file. Too many inquiries in a short window makes lenders nervous.
- Do not fill out several applications at once “just to compare”.
- Checking your own file never affects your score.
- Go instead to a lender who assesses your file in-house: your application is not shopped to several institutions.
Step 6: Use a car loan as a lever
A well-managed car loan is one of the most effective rebuilding tools. Why?
- Every on-time payment is reported to the bureaus and builds your history.
- It adds variety to your file (step 3).
- It gives you an essential asset while your credit climbs back.
